Transfiguration and The Bomb

Don Jim has a good post up on the Transfiguration and the moral teaching of the Church on the atom bomb. Of course, he is right, and even I have to admit that the indiscriminate bombing of London by the Luftwaffe was probably morally wrong. The Church doesn't mention the English by name, though...

I don't get that either. It would seem that you make a man a pastor of a small number of souls before entrusting a diocese to him. But, since I don't make those decisions, and those who do don't come to me for advice (probably a good thing), I don't worry too much about it.

Cardinal Rigali wrote a piece on this that was rather mealy-mouthed, though it ultimately made the same point.

Part of the problem is that Rigali doesn't write well, though I understand he was once a translator at the Vatican. On an unrelated matter-he was never a pastor, which is oddly typical of bishops, at least of those who head dioceses or archdioceses. What's the deal with that?
