Proud Father Moments!

Yesterday Amalia helped me make pesto (her new favorite dish is pasta al pesto).

Today, after hearing the song only once, she had the chorus for "Ring of Fire" memorized and was happily singing it to Melanie.

That, my dear readers, is the very model of a Central Valley Wop: able to appreciate real Italian food AND Johnny Cash. Next thing you know she'll have her tricycle up on cinder blocks.

Maybe tomorrow I'll teach her "Okie from Muskogee." Then, next time we are visiting family up in Redding, she can go over and sing it to the songwriter.

Gotta get that girl a toy gun! It'd match her blue suede cowgirl boots.

Rednecks, rednecks uber Alles!

A little. She can certainly understand it. At her preschool she trades Italian lessons for Spanish lessons. It's cute:

Amalia: uno, due, tre, quattro, cinque...
Other child: uno, dos, tres, quatro, cinco...
Amalia: uno, dos, tre, I mean, tres, quattro, cinco...Babbo, I am counting in Spanish!

At home she hears Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and French, and seems to be able to keep them distinct. German she knows as the language that Babbo starts ranting in when the line has been completely crossed. He also turns this impressive color, somewhere between a beet and a stop sign.

I've spent some time in Sacramento, Modesto, and Turlock (on old Highway 99)and it sounds as if Amalia is blending in. Can she speak Spanish?
