Pink Popcorn
I rediscovered a childhood treat today. At the zoo, I used to get pink popcorn, a block of popcorn with some pink sticky stuff that seemed like deflated cotton candy. They sell it at the Oakland Zoo, so I bought a block for Amalia and I to share. It was as good as I remember.
OK, so it has a slightly stale and fake taste, but it is one of those slightly stale and fake tastes that brings back all sorts of fun memories. Do all zoos sell this stuff? Can you get it anywhere but a zoo?
Posted by erik at March 1, 2005 1:01 AM | TrackBackMy mom recently bought a case of Wright's Pink Popcorn and was very disappointed. She and a friend went in on the case. She and her friend at work said the stuff they used to eat as kids tasted like sarsparilla, but the Wright's stuff was so bland. It's looks really tasty, but it's bland beyond belief when you try it. So, besides Wright's, what other brands are there?

Posted by: sandy g at August 25, 2007 6:50 PMI'm a lover of Pink Popcorn and have been since I was a kid in San Francisco, then in 1956 I worked for the Wright Popcorn Co. at their old factory one block west of VenNes I poped the corn and deliverd to the Zoo and the Park and alot of the down town shows and the old Seals ball park,I also rosted the peanuts for the Zoo and Park, and help make some of the best caramel popcorn you have ever tasted. We visited the new factory on Poterero St a few years back and picked up a few cases, What a treat,I'm going to start having it sent to us. Remembering when !!
Posted by: Gene Haynes at June 28, 2007 8:18 AMThank you for posting this! I'm originally from Palo Alto and remember eating this when I was a kid. Have never seen it sold in any store since I've moved away from CA.
Posted by: JT at June 23, 2007 5:26 PMYou can order directly from Wright's Popcorn, get a case of 50 or 100...the case of 50 is, I think $27, and they ship it to your home fast.
We now get the box of 100 it's so addicting. We have it shipped, but you can pick it up at the factory also....funny even fresh, it tastes the same...kinda stale. The phone number is on thier web site, you have to actually call them, but it's worth it to hear the Lady say "Wright's popcorn" so cheerful, as if you call back in time to the 40's
wright's pink popcorn...goto allrecipes.com and search popcorn. the recipe using any flavor or gelatin might be good to make your own or sugar, corn syrup, food coloring. there are many to try. and it wont be stale. best recipe site on web i've found.

The company that makes the pink popcorn sold around the Bay Area is Wright Popcorn & Nut Company in San Francisco. I believe they're still making it. http://www.wrightpopcorn.com/

Posted by: at October 22, 2006 5:14 PMWOW so many of us Pink popcorn lovers, who would have thought. The San Francisco Zoo late 60's early 70's with DAD and "my" elephant key both of which are no longer, but pink popcorn always brings me back to wonderful warm memories, of many fond days spent on many not so warm days at the Zoo with two of my favorites DAD and pink popcorn. Thanks for the memories. KMS

Posted by: at September 21, 2006 4:26 PMMy mom used to buy Wright's pink popcorn at the SF Zoo and golden gate Park in SF. That was in 1953. Last week I bought a package in a San Mateo park concession stand. It hasn't changed in 53 years! Tastes like sugared cardboard, but I love it.
Posted by: Mike M. at August 25, 2006 11:49 AMI was recently at the Santa Rosa Fair where I looked high and low to find some pink popcorn. I found it--I bought 10 bags and gave them to the family-I think I paid too much, but it does not matter. I lover the stuff and when I find it, it brings back childhood memories. Boy its good.

I used to get it all the time at the SF zoo, it is hard to find outside the Bay Area. You can get it at some Longs Drugs stores but that is rare. This is where I buy mine from since I no longer live up in that location http://www.carouselcandies.com I have done it many times over the years.

Posted by: at December 22, 2005 5:43 PMI have found pink popcorn at my neighborhood gas station in novato ca.
Posted by: at October 12, 2005 5:54 PMPink popcorn seems to be a west coast phenom. It IS stale, yet tasty. Not too sweet, not buttery at all. It is sold by the Wright Popcorn and Nut Company (I was introduced to it at a zoo in Fresno), and I truly miss it out here in the Midwest, but if you are wrangling up a recipe, I'd focus on a light, not-too-sticky corn syrup glaze that mostly soaks in...
Posted by: sheryl at July 31, 2005 2:43 PMwhen i would go to coney island in brooklyn i use to get this sweet pink and white popcorn. do you have any idea where i can still get this popcorn from.
thanks,
joyce
I can honestly say that I've never (ever) seen that before. I'm intrigued.
Posted by: BP at March 2, 2005 8:25 AMHmmm. I am not sure I could. I mean, what would get that peculiar texture and the flavor of, what, imitation butter and artificial cotton candy?
I suppose that I could pop some popcorn, then toss it in some sort of confectionary goo, then press it in blocks and dry it at 200 degrees (convection, or 250 in a conventional, turning frequently).
Amalia would certainly prefer purple, but I think that pink is the way to go with this stuff. It just glows better!
Posted by: Erik Keilholtz at March 1, 2005 9:36 AMErik:
Pink popcorn should be found at county fairs, carnivals, little league snack stands, etc. Ever thought of giving it the "Alice Waters Treatment"? How about a recipe for purple popcorn (horses and lions love it!)?
