Friday Five
At this moment, what is your favorite...
1. ...song?
"Arrivederci Roma" as sung by Claudio Villa
2. ...food?
Duck confit with spicy mixed greens and a good pinot noir
3. ...tv show?
That great one when the set is off and I am reading a book. Otherwise the Teletubbies (although Amalia is not too keen on it, so I have to wait until she is in bed).
4. ...scent?
Wild mushrooms or maybe pancetta being gently fried in goose fat.
5. ...quote? Well, paraphrase, as I do not have it in front of me:
"When one sees a woman preach it is like watching a dog walk on two legs. One does not marvel at how well it is done, rather that it is done at all."

Actually I walk out when any non-ordained preacher takes the place of the priest or deacon at mass. Nuns reflecting, laymen giving the financial report, children bragging about their environmentalism, none of that belongs in the Liturgy of the Word. I suppose that nuns reflecting is the worst, because it betrays a desire to the priesthood, which is a mix of disobedience and heresy.
I am not one of these ultra-conservatives who think that it is incorrect for women to read the Scripture at mass, but if it is the only way to make it clear the nature of the priesthood, then I am all for going back to the rule of no women allowed beyond the altar rail.
Posted by: Erik Keilholtz at January 26, 2004 10:59 AMDo you really walk out if a nun is preaching? I know that gets into the priest/priestess thing conservative RC's are obsessed with, but still...
Posted by: John Salmon at January 24, 2004 8:14 PMSure is. I forgot to attribute it. Sorry. Great quote, though, and one I think of whenever I have to walk out of mass when I encounter a preaching nun.
